The Honourable Peter J. Osborne

Congratulations to our Partner, Peter J. Osborne, on his appointment today as a Judge of the Superior Court of Justice in Ontario.

Peter is one of Canada’s leading litigators and appellate counsel. His broad advocacy practice had an emphasis on cross-border commercial disputes, complex cross-border restructuring and insolvency cases, class actions and securities matters, as well as professional malpractice litigation and disciplinary proceedings.

“Peter will be taking his oath of office after thirty successful years at the Bar, twenty-nine of which were spent here at Lenczner Slaght. Besides his client work, Peter was involved in recruiting generations of our students and lawyers and mentoring many more. He added enormously to the life of the firm with his wit and wisdom,” says Tom Curry, Managing Partner of Lenczner Slaght. “I am very pleased that we can now count among our alumni, our very first Judge!”

Peter was born and raised in Toronto. He earned a Bachelor of Arts from Queen’s University in 1987 and a Bachelor of Laws from Osgoode Hall Law School in 1990. He was called to the Bar of Ontario in 1992.

Peter was one of the first lawyers hired at Lenczner Slaght, having joined in 1993. As a lawyer, Peter developed experience in the full range of the work of the firm where he earned a reputation in the Court as a leading advocate. In 2020, Peter was named a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, a recognition reserved for the very best. His recent work on The Advocates’ Society Modern Advocacy Task Force will guide the profession and the Court for years to follow.

Recognizing the importance of contributing to the profession, he has mentored young lawyers, taught trial advocacy for many years at Osgoode Hall Law School and the University of Toronto, taught the Bar Admission Course in both Ontario and Newfoundland and Labrador, and participated in many legal education programs. He has been recognized repeatedly by clients, peers, and senior members of the profession for his renowned litigation expertise in Chambers and Lexpert, among others.

Congratulations, Peter, on this well-deserved appointment!
