Mariam Moktar is a Precedent Setter

We are proud to announce that one of our advocates, Mariam Moktar, has been recognized with the 2018 Precedent Setter Award.

Mariam is recognized for showing excellence and leadership in her practice and in the community.

"We are thrilled that Mariam has been recognized by Precedent as a precedent setter," says Managing Partner, Tom Curry. "Her leadership in the firm and the broader community  reminds all of us about the importance of the work we do together."

Mariam is an experienced lawyer who makes clients her top priority and vigorously advocates on their behalf. Her sound judgment and exceptional work ethic is the difference in every case she is on. She is one of our expert litigators. Mariam’s varied civil litigation practice includes professional liability and regulation, employment litigation, commercial litigation, administrative law and class actions. She has appeared before all levels of court in Ontario, the Federal Court, and various administrative boards and tribunals.

When Mariam is not working, she volunteers her time. Mariam is the co-founder of the Canadian Association of Somali Lawyers (“CASL”), which is a national organization of Somali-Canadian legal professionals working to promote equity, justice, and opportunities for Somali-Canadian legal professionals and to facilitate access to legal services for the Somali-Canadian community. Mariam has served as Vice-President for two years and is currently the President of CASL. Mariam also provides pro bono legal services to members of the community, and mentors young members of the Somali community. At Lenczner Slaght, Mariam mentors articling students and junior associates. She is a member of the Diversity and Inclusion Committee as well as the Gale Cup Committee.

Mariam also appears on the cover of the latest issue of Precedent Magazine and was interviewed about her recognition. Read an excerpt from the article below:

Tom Curry, the managing partner, is impressed by how she excels on her feet. He remembers watching one motion that, at first, he thought was a long shot — until Moktar stood up to argue. “There was a noticeable shift,” he recalls. “Our side breathed easier. She has a natural gift of persuasion.”

Congratulations, Mariam, on the well-deserved award!

About the Precedent Setter Awards
The Precedent Setter Awards recognize Ontario lawyers who have shown excellence and leadership in their practices and their communities, during their first 10 years of practice. Sponsored by Precedent, the magazine for young lawyers, the awards seek to recognize lawyers who reflect the diversity of the profession. Nominations come from members of the legal community who have worked closely with the nominees and are judged by a panel of leading lawyers who represent the diversity of the profession.
