We serve a diverse range of clients on a broad spectrum of legal issues. Practicing both trial and appellate advocacy, our lawyers appear at all levels of courts, at arbitrations and before many administrative tribunals across the country.
We are recognized leaders in commercial litigation, with clients that include many national and multinational corporations. We also enjoy a counsel practice and have referred to us interesting and complex cases to litigate. Our commercial litigation practice includes shareholder disputes, insolvency, securities and class actions, among other areas.
In addition to commercial litigation, a substantial part of our practice includes the representation of physicians in malpractice actions and disciplinary matters. Our practice also includes other professional liability matters, intellectual property, insurance, administrative and employment litigation.
As a litigation firm, each member of the firm shares a passion for and dedication to advocacy. This passion can be seen in our every day practice. Our lawyers share their experiences with other lawyers and the students at the firm, both formally though continuing legal education sessions and informally at the office. Our articling and summer students are an extremely important part of our firm. Our size allows students to quickly become part of the fabric of the firm.

Students can expect a comprehensive orientation and training program in their first week at the firm. Our lawyers are natural teachers and enjoy passing knowledge on to our students. Our orientation week equips students with the tools required to shorten the learning curve and enjoy success at the firm. Our programs deal with the practice of litigation and range from an overview of an action to more in-depth discussions on motions, examinations for discovery, undertakings etc. We also encourage our students to attend external education programs.
The firm provides each student with a mentor to assist with integration into the firm and to take an active role in the professional development of our students. Each mentor ensures that their mentee is benefiting from a diverse summer or articling experience. Mentors are encourage to take their mentee to client meetings, court, pre-trials and discoveries and to ensure that other lawyers at the firm do so as well.

A variety of firm social events are held in which members of the firm have the opportunity to spend time together on a more informal basis. Our students attend all of the firm’s social activities, including a summer celebration, Winterfest and the Holiday Party. We also hold a barbeque for our summer and articling students at one or our lawyer’s homes, so that the two groups can get to know each other and the lawyers out of the office. Other planned student events such as bowling, pub nights etc. are arranged throughout the year.

Our students are involved at all stages of the litigation process and given a great deal of responsibility, students draft pleadings and factums, prepare motion records and conduct legal research. Articling students attend court on opposed and unopposed motions, trials, appeals, arbitrations and other hearings, and take carriage of small claims court files. Students meet with clients and witnesses, attend examinations for discovery and regularly accompany our lawyers to all levels of courts and other tribunals.
Because our goal is to produce superior advocates, our students are given broad and intense exposure to the litigation process. We teach by example and our students learn by doing. As our firm is committed exclusively to litigation, there is no rotation system. Students are given the opportunity to work with all our lawyers on a wide variety of litigation matters. A student who has a special interest in an area of our practice is encouraged to express that interest.
